DICKIES VIDEO LOG EXAMINES THE ROUGH AND TUMBLE BLACKOUT PARTY

BLACKOUTPARTY_JOELSON

It’s really starting to look like Blackout Party is built to last. With 2011 and 2012 San Diego music awards on their mantle, a nominee for “Best Rock” and a performance slot at this year’s awards show, plus two albums under their belt with another being recorded by year’s end, it makes sense that people are starting to notice. So much so that acclaimed music mag Filter and clothing line Dickies built a three-part series entitled “Building the Band” around what makes the band tick.

BLACK MARKET III READIES NEW RECORD AND 13th INTERNATIONAL TOUR

Black Market III Black Roses

Black Market III is one of the hardest working, hardest rocking bands in San Diego. You can usually catch their high energy, blues-drenched, leave-nothing-behind live show multiple times a week up and down the coast. But come fall, you’re going to need a passport to catch up with this three-piece rock ‘n’ roll band.

SHAKE BEFORE US – SHOW REVIEW

Shake Before Us

August 15th at Carlsbad’s Boar Cross’n, Shake Before Us cooked up a livid set of measured chaos. They have a fine knack, whether on purpose or not, of tilting on the edge of derailment. They seem to get some guilty pleasure from taking their songs to the edge, finding a shaky balance, and then returning to safer, steady ground for their landing.

JOSH DAMIGO – KICKIN’ IT CROSS COUNTRY

Josh Damigo

Josh Damigo is about to embark on a 3,000 mile trek, bringing his singer/songwriter talents to 30 different tour stops across the country. With momentum and a list of dos and don’ts learned from a similar tour last year to support his album Hope, Damigo has established a Kickstarter campaign to offset costs. Between packing, rehearsing, and doing the multitude of other things a completely independent artist (no help from a label here) does to prepare for a tour, we were able to sneak in a few questions.

DARIUS DEGHER’S LEUCADIA LOVE SONG

Darius Degher

There haven’t been too many songs that have name-checked San Diego over the years. Tom Waits gave us “San Diego Serenade;” Springsteen throws in a mention about a french restaurant in “Rosalita;” Bing Crosby crooned about when the surf meets the turf in Del Mar; and more recently, Paul Cannon offers the San Diego (Padres semi theme?) song “Homegrown.” None of these, though, possess the hometown adulation that Darius Degher pours into his single “Leucadia Love Song.”

AMSD: ONE OF SAN DIEGO’S MOST UNIQUE VENUES CELEBRATES 10 YEARS

AMSD Church

Hats off to AMSD (Acoustic Music San Diego) as it celebrates its 10 year anniversary this month! One of San Diego’s most unique concert venues and housed at the Normal Heights United Methodist Church, AMSD is the love child of Carey Driscoll. Here’s an interview I did with Carey last year where he talks about how this all came together, why he works so hard at this, and what keeps him and the church rocking after all these years.

CITYBEAT’S FESTIVAL OF BEERS’ BANDS TALK BEER… AND MUSIC

City Beat Beer Fest 2013

Adding to the ales, lagers, malts, IPAs, ciders and more will be the rock and roll of three great local bands–The Family Wagon, The Palace Ballroom and The Paragraphs. Okay, so they know how to rock, that’s obvious, but do they know their beers?

THE HEAVY GUILT’S HEFTY ALBUM RELEASE BASH

The Heavy Guilt

The Heavy Guilt, one of San Diego’s most ambitious and engaging bands, is kicking off the launch of their third album with a monster record release party Saturday, April 6th, at The Irenic. Bringing along a few San Diego heavyweights to round out the celebration, the lineup for the night includes Little Hurricane, Dead Feather Moon, The SteelWells, and Trouble in The Wind.

SXSW 2013 – TALL TALES FROM TEXAS

SxSW 2013

Dead Squirrels clutching beer bottles, 50 Cent, Soul Boulder smoothies, food trucks, mind blowing mushrooms and Rick Springfield are just a few sites and sounds local San Diegans experienced at this year’s SXSW. Now that everyone has fully recovered from the trip, we rounded up a few locals who made the yearly pilgrimage and asked them five questions about their March jaunt to Austin, Texas.
