Humphreys by the Bay Top 5 2011 Must See Shows

Humphreys by the Bay is one of San Diego’s crown jewels of music venues. Sitting under the stars as the palm trees sway by the bay, the excellent sound system and intimate seating (under 1,500 seats) make any night’s show memorable. The line up is very diverse and attracts some big name players. Here’s my top 5 must see shows for this year’s line up.

5. Chris Isaak
Chris Isaak is a true American performer. A musician with acting chops, Isaak’s shows are filled with tight, back beat fueled arrangements and some of the best in-between song banter you will ever come across. Isaak always surrounds himself with a crack band, so expect the sound to be spot on. Combine that with Isaak’s more than reputable voice and material and you have the recipe for a fine night under the stars.

4. America’s 40th Anniversary Tour
Hey, it’s America! You know: “The Horse With No Name,” “Sister Golden Hair,”
“You Can Do Magic,” “Tin Man,” and “Ventura Highway.” The harmonies are still there and will be in full effect as this iconic folk rock band celebrates with their 40th Anniversary tour.

3. Tears For Fears
Here’s a rare chance to catch one of the eighties’ biggest hit makers in Tears For Fears. Still sporting the original two members Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal, the band doesn’t get out much in the states and the intimate venue that is Humphreys is the perfect setting for their deep rock catalog.

2. Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt
Two of America’s greatest song writers together with just their guitars make this pairing a must see on the 2011 calendar. John Hiatt is a well respected song writer whose songs have been covered by Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson and B.B. King, to name a few. Lovett is the lanky Texan whose dry wit and delivery is unmatched. But, don’t be fooled by his appearance. This man delivers some of the deepest heartfelt numbers you will ever hear. This is a real treat, and a not-to-be-missed show for the singer-songwriter fans of San Diego.

1. B.B. King
Royalty graces the stage this August as the king of the blues B.B. King makes his way to San Diego. Aging gracefully, this blues legend is one of the last living testaments to the American musical art form we call the blues. To be in his presence is magical and to see him on a hot night in August at Humphreys by the Bay is the highlight of this year’s line up.

    Andrew-
Would love to get down to Humphrey’s to see that Lovett/Hiatt show, those are two of my favorite song writers. Seen any good shows at the Belly lately?

Give me a call let’s go see a show!

Indigo girls always draw an enthusiastic crowd to Humphrey’s as well. Lovett and Hiatt should be quite a mix as well. I would have no idea what those guys could play together.
