Joan Jett Live at the San Diego County Fair

Joan Jett

Joan Jett is immortal. In fact, she hasn’t aged at all! At least that’s the way it looked as she closed the fourth of July show at the San Diego County Fair. She is still the same raunchy, rebellious punk rocker that comes in a 5 foot nothing package. She still has an attitude, she still wears the same black tight-fitting clothes and black high tops, and she still rocks! Hard!

Couldn’t find a better representation of the melting pot that is America last night as Joan followed the Southwest Navy Band’s salute to America. We went from “God Bless America” to “Bad Reputation.” Joan just comes unapologetic and with absolutely no nonsense in her delivery. She plants her feet, stands in, and belts out her tunes about androgyny and threesomes without batting an eye.
It was nice to hear a couple of Runaways tunes thrown into her set. It served as a great reminder of where this woman rocker has come from. Find me another female that can and has kicked this much ass over the years as Joan Jett! There is none; she stands alone in this genre of music. So it was nice to hear this female rock legend work through her deep, healthy catalog.
But what was really the highlight was the energy coming off the stage. Joan’s lead guitarist was pumped and fueled the heavy power chord laden numbers. Couldn’t help but think this would have gone down even better in a small, dark, sweaty, over-crowded nightclub where all this music had its origin. But then, hell, it’s the San Diego Fair and we’ve got Joan Jett and The Blackhearts kicking ass all over the 4th of July! God Bless Rock and Roll!
