Nena Anderson and Trevor Davis of Dr. Seahorse Discuss Banding Together

Banding Together

Banding Together is a local nonprofit giving music therapy scholarships, mentorships, and instruments to kids with autism and other special needs. All of the fine work of Banding Together will be celebrated at the 2nd annual fundraiser on Wednesday, June 6th, at the Belly Up. Two of the artists, Nena Anderson and Trevor Davis of Dr. Seahorse, who will be donating their talents and performing to help raise awareness and funds, spoke to me about the power of music in their lives.

1. One of the themes of Banding Together is the transformational power of music.  How or where has music transformed your life?
Growing up as a very shy person I didn’t say much to anyone, especially in large groups. Music became a voice and means to connect and express myself to others.

2. Banding Together uses music to help children with special needs learn about life. Name the most important life lesson you have learned through music.
I’ve learned that the way I personally view my musical ability reveals my level of maturity.  If I think it’s there for self recognition, then I must not feel loved enough. If it’s all about being heard, then I must not feel listened to. If I’m sharing in order to uplift others, then my heart is in a good spot of rest and response.  I want my music to be a response and not simply to exist so I can receive a response.

3. What drew you to support Banding Together?
I like how Banding Together uses the gift of music to help unlock expression.

4. Why would you recommend this cause to other musicians who are considering helping out Banding Together?
I would recommend Banding Together cause it’s such a great idea!  I’m sure on some level we all have similar stories how music helps us.  So why not help others experience the same joy?

1. One of the themes of Banding Together is the transformational power of music. How or where has music transformed your life?
Music has and continues to transform my life. The act of performing alone is an amazing emotional and physical release which seems to always be able to lighten my heart and clear my head. And listening to music, especially live shows, has gotten me through many difficult times in my life.

2. Banding Together uses music to help children with special needs learn about life. Name the most important life lesson you have learned through music.
Two things: honesty and empathy. Music created and written and performed honestly teaches us how to empathize with each other. We connect to it in our realization that we all share similar feelings of fear, hope, love, anger and more…and in that realization we feel less alone and even comforted.

3. What drew you to support Banding Together?
Kids + Music. I think all children should have the opportunity and resources to learn to play music. Not only does it help with cognitive development, it is also an excellent way to learn to express your emotions…an outlet that can be accessed throughout life.

4. Any suggestions to other musicians who are considering helping out Banding Together?
It’s difficult trying to survive as a working musician…and with all the self-promotion and such, it’s sometimes hard to see beyond your own needs and trying to make a living. Sharing your talents with people that might not otherwise be exposed to music expression is a great way to put life in perspective.
