Roy Rogers – Gator By The Bay Festival

Roy Rogers

In honor of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, one of the greatest gatherings of musical talent each year, San Diego throws down its own festival every spring. Dubbed “Gator By The Bay,” this year’s festival featured one of blues’ most talented slide guitar players, Roy Rogers. So, when I saw his name pop up on the lineup, I instantly bought tickets. There was no way I was going to miss this sorcerer of the slide in my own back yard! Armed with my dear fiancé, who is always up for some good music, we headed down to Spanish Landing. After catching a few zydeco bands and a crawfish po’boy, we made our way to the afternoon’s main event. Now, most people have never heard of this legend of the blues, including the fiancé. So, when Roy stepped on stage and started ripping it, the look on her jaw-dropped face was priceless. With all apologies to current slide greats Johnny Winter, Warren Haynes, and Derek Trucks, Roy Rogers is the fastest, most electrifying slide player I have ever seen.

Today, he was teamed up with Johnny Vernazza who used to play in Elvin Bishop’s band. This high-spirited blues man, armed with his own slide, steered the show and gave Roy the opportunity to show off his rich feel for the blues. Rogers, whose tone was perfect, really seemed dialed in as he switched between electric and acoustic guitars. As the show moved on, Roy just kept reaching deeper, especially as the crowd grew more and more enthused by his mind-blowing slide solos. By the end of the set, Rogers and Vernazza had the Gator By The Bay crowd whipped into a pretty good frenzy, leaving most, including us, shaking our heads in disbelief as to what we just saw. As we walked back to the car, the fiancé was still buzzing from the show, going on and on about Roy’s slide. I couldn’t help but smile, happy to convert another follower to the camp of Roy Rogers.

Here’s a small sample of Roy’s slide skills:

My friend was entertained when reading one paragraph on your post “… Vernazza who used to play in Elvin Bishop&#8217s band. This high-spirited blues man, armed with his own slide, …” it also made me think about the day I ran across my wife.

Keep any eye on your local blues scene Clarence, Roy tours every now and then. Without out a doubt this guy is worth the price of admission.
