Revoltaire uncorked their 40 minute set Sunday night at The Belly Up with “Black Water,” the deep soul groove shaker from their self-entitled first album. With no desire to waste a moment of their opening slot’s time limit, the band came out with a big, bold, loud statement.

I was no more than a foot through the door when this powerful female vocal, who I swear was channeling the ghost of Janis Joplin, slapped me a good one right across the face. I couldn’t see the band yet, but the sound was so powerful, so intense, so full of this unabashed energy that it seemed to pull me like a magnet to the front of the stage. And for the next 40 minutes, I witnessed one of the best sets I saw in 2011.
