Ever since Australian native Dean Gifford caught a late night broadcast of a Steve Poltz concert back in 2005, he has traveled to the U.S. to celebrate the annual birthday bash. After learning more about Dean, I couldn’t help but ask if he would share his story and review of this year’s Belly Up show.

Last year, in conjunction with KPBS, Belly Up Tavern kicked off a music-centered program, a kind of “Austin City Limits meets Soul Train” filmed at the famed club in Solana Beach. The first year bookings of local acts Dead Feather Moon, Vokab Kompany, The Grass Heat, Brawley, The B-Side Players, and Bushwalla, to name a few, sparked not only the Friday night audience, but the Belly Up’s thirst for more.

Josh Damigo is about to embark on a 3,000 mile trek, bringing his singer/songwriter talents to 30 different tour stops across the country. With momentum and a list of dos and don’ts learned from a similar tour last year to support his album Hope, Damigo has established a Kickstarter campaign to offset costs. Between packing, rehearsing, and doing the multitude of other things a completely independent artist (no help from a label here) does to prepare for a tour, we were able to sneak in a few questions.
